Resting breathing rate – a method to assess heart function

A pet with heart disease may have an increase in both the breathing rate and or breathing effort. An animal’s breathing pattern may be easily monitored at home. Each breath may be seen as the chest rises with inhalation and falls with exhalation—one cycle of inhalation and exhalation equals one breath. To determine the breathing rate, simply observe your pet in a calm situation and count the number of breaths per minute. Alternatively, count the number of breaths taken in a 3

Radiolab podcast on interesting insights into the most fatal infectious disease ever known…Rabies

Rabies is the most fatal disease known I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts this past week and thought that you would enjoy it as well. For our clients, the take-home message is that Rabies virus is not something to be messed with. It is imperative that your dogs and cats be vaccinated on a timely basis. I hope I can someday retire having never seen a single case of Rabies. If you are not sure of the vaccination status of your pet, please call the clinic for more in

    Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis – a Threat to Your Dog’s Health 3/27/17 (Update: Leptospirosis on the rise around the United States. Here is a recent report from New Jersey.) Leptospirosis (“Lepto”) is a disease caused by a spiral-shaped bacteria that is found worldwide. Infections can affect people as well as many kinds of animals including dogs. Leptospirosis thrives in warm, moist areas (especially in stagnant water). While Arizona has not typically been associated with leptospirosis in the

Heartworm disease in Chandler and Gilbert Arizona

With the recent storms, there is a huge increase in the mosquito population in the East Valley, especially Chandler and Gilbert. I (Dr. Tenney) know this first-hand as one morning this past week I ventured out into my back yard in the early dawn hours. In less the 15 seconds, I was under a full-blown assault by mosquitoes. Many of you realize that mosquitoes are required for the transmission heartworm disease. Stagnant pools or water are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. There

Omega-3 fatty acids for relief of allergic skin disease and treatment of arthritis

Omega-3 supplementation for the health of skin and joints The answer to this is YES, they do work. There are scientific studies verifying the benefits of Omega-3 for both skin and arthritic conditions. If you are interested in reading one actual journal article verifying the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in dogs with arthritis, Multicenter assessment of effects of omega-3 fatty acids in osteoarthritis in dogs. If Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be effective in preventing a

    Parvovirus is back

I invite you to review the signs of parvo and review other pertinent information.  This link is to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s website. There is a lot of useful information out there on the prevention and treatment of parvovirus. Unfortunately, there are many myths that circulate as well. The only thing you can really do to prevent your pet from contracting this serious and potentially fatal disease is to keep vaccines current. One depressing situation happe

Giardia – common parasite, common questions

Symptoms for Giardia include but are not limited to: diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. Usually though, it is found on routine fecal examination in an otherwise apparently healthy animal. Even in these cases where your pet does not appear to be sick, it is important to treat the Giardia to prevent the continued shedding of parasite into the environment and making your pet and others sick. Once a pet is found to have Giardia, we will start with a course of therapy that usually

Common methods of giving Adequan injections at Oasis Animal Hospital

Several years ago, we began to offer Adequan for our clients to administer to their own pets as an in-home treatment option. The advantages of this were twofold. Ease of use. Usually the pets needing Adequan injections were older, larger patients that were difficult to load, transport and treat in the clinic twice weekly. Cost – By providing Adequan as an in-home treatment, we were able to reduce the cost for our clients as well. The usual protocol for Adequan is to give the

Nexgard™ is available at Oasis Animal Hospital

We are excited to announce that we are providing Nexgard™ to our clients with dogs. This is a once-a-month chewable from the makers of Frontline that is just as effective — if not more so. It’s a chewable treat and thus there is no chance the medication will rub off on your hands or come off if your pet gets wet. It’s also beef flavored so dogs tend to love them. Is a prescription required? We only sell this product to our clients. We welcome new clients for any reason. If yo

A recent news article in the Arizona Republic brought attention to an exciting development in Veterinary Education.  Midwestern University is about to open the first new College of Veterinary Medicine in the United States in many years. What is this man doing in our dumpster?

John came up with an unusual and wonderful passion in his version of “giving back” to the community. For many years John has gathered and collected recyclable material and sold it in order to raise money for an annual bicycle drive for kids without the means to buy them. In fact, he has even repaired and restored bicycles to donate. So when John shows up here, digging through our recycle bin, it makes me smile. This year John is devoting his proceeds to assist in purchasing s

Ebola Virus – what you need to know

There is justifiable concern around the world for the actual and potential harm caused by Ebola virus. We wanted to share some pertinent and useful information about Ebola, pets families and risks of infection. You may be aware that in Spain, health care workers euthanized a pet belonging to a victim of Ebola. But in the United States, health workers have taken a different approach to preventing the spread of this disease. (Dallas Ebola patient’s dog will be saved – USAToday)

F.I.V. or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is still around

There is a vaccine available for F.I.V. at this time. The success rate in preventing infection is estimated at about 80%. But that means that one in 5 cats that are vaccinated will still contract the viral infection. One negative of this vaccine is that it will cause all current methods of testing to show the cat to be “positive”. It is a concern for us that we could have truly positive cats that we couldn’t recognize as such. Here is a link to useful website that has more in

    Keeping them warm

July does not seem like a time to consider how to best keep your pet warm. But pets undergoing anesthesia have a tendency to lose body heat very quickly. I asked one of our technicians, Christa, to summarize the methods we use to make sure your pet has a safe anesthesia and rapid recovery. Their article is below. —————– #Anesthesia #Gilbert #Chandler #bairhugger #hypothermia #IVfluids

    Heartworm Disease is HERE

This year has been the worst year on record for Oasis Animal Hospital patients being diagnosed with heartworm disease. One recent case motivated me to notify our clients again of the importance of testing and prevention. Previously thought to be of low risk in this area, we have seen a dramatic increase in heartworm disease over the past few months. Now Bandit faces a treatment protocol that is both risky and expensive. I am committed to communicating with as many of our clie
