Tips for Pet Weight Loss

There are many reasons a pet may be overweight or obese. It’s important to consult with us before starting your pet on a weight loss path. We will look for any underlying medical conditions that may have contributed your pet’s weight gain, such as hypothyroidism. Together, we will determine what specific weight loss plan is best suited for your pet’s needs.

1. Cut calories by decreasing food intake by approximately 25%. Switching the food to a low fat food may not be necessary at first. For example, if you feed 1cup twice a day, decrease to 3/4 cup twice a day. Be sure to use an actual measuring cup. If, however, after reducing the amount of food you are feeding has not resulted in weight loss, we will recommend using one of the veterinary specific diets designed to help with weight loss. They are: Hill’s Metabolic diet, Purina OM, and Royal Canin Satiety Support

2. Limit treats, according to our recommendation. Also, healthy alternatives such as fresh green beans, carrots, or peas are a better choice.

3. As with humans, a routine of exercise to accompany healthy diet choices are also essential for weight loss. We will discuss the proper amount of exercise that your specific pet will be able to tolerate.

4. Finally, together we will set a goal weight, and track that by weighing your pet about every two weeks. After achieving the goal weight, consult with us concerning a feeding amount that is appropriate for maintenance.
