Many situations can result in a sudden change in the health of a dog’s intestinal tract. But no matter what the initial cause is, loose stools or diarrhea are the common outcome. Why is this so? As the body reacts to stress, the normal or “healthy” bacteria decrease allowing other bacteria to proliferate.
Most of us have an appreciation of how probiotics work for us. This website explains the basics of probiotic use in the United States.
We offer two veterinary specific probiotics in our practice. The first is Prostora Max (Iams) and the second is Endurosyn (Teva Animal Health). It is our experience that using probiotics in cases of uncomplicated diarrhea is a very useful first step in healing an unhealthy digestive tract. Some pets benefit from frequent of even continuous use of one of these products, but that is the exception, not the rule.
Please call or email us if you have any questions regarding if your pet would benefit from taking probiotics.
